Training Opportunities

Advanced Leadwork

The continuing high demand for quality leadwork installation, whilst welcomed by LCA members, has nevertheless put them under increasing pressure to rapidly expand or develop a skilled labour force that remains adept in meeting the demands of the craft's more intricate design features.

Basic induction and early stage development training is available through the City & Guilds 6055 Leadwork Certificate courses operated by the Lead Training Academy and co-ordinated by them through a network of approved FE colleges, as well as their own custom-built premises in East Peckham, Kent.

There is also now the opportunity to "fast-track" a competent leadworker on to a more advanced level, with the Lead Contractors Association having designed advanced leadwork courses for contractors working with lead and these courses are now being delivered by the LTA at East Peckham and by Lead Delegated Assessment at the Buuilding Crafts College in Stratford, East London.

The courses are set at two levels, silver and gold, based upon the original criteria for leadwork under the Roofing Industry Council "Hallmark" scheme. Each type of course provides intensive training and instruction for the already experienced leadworker, setting a series of demanding tasks on the full scale model roof and life size timber models of domes, turrets and spires.

The instructors and demonstrators are either fully qualified training professionals or are drawn from the industry itself and are all knowledgeable, experienced masters at the very peak of the craft.

In establishing an advanced training programme for the industry by the industry, the LCA is ensuring the leadwork craft skills developed by its top exponents are being passed on to the next generation of craftsmen and the hard won quality standards reputation of the specialist leadwork contractor is being protected and preserved.

City & Guilds 6055 Certificate

The City & Guilds 6055 Leadworkers Certificate represents a national qualification in leadwork, which is co-ordinated by the Lead Training Academy from its custom built centre in East Peckham, Kent and through a network of approved FE colleges.

Designed for those that want to acquire the skills for working lead sheet, the course is broken down into four separate modules covering (1) Flashing details (2) Weatherings (3) Flat and Pitched roofs (4) Cladding and Dormers. A more advanced Module 5 will shortly be available. The course is mainly practical with related technology integrated with lectures covering design, repair, maintenance, fire prevention and ventilation details for roof structures.

Those with little or no previous experience of leadwork should preferably have previously obtained a Basic Bossing and Welding Certificates from either the LTA or Lead Delegated Assessment at the Building Crafts College. Although there are no special entry requirements for C&G Module 1, some experience of working lead sheet would be an advantage, as this will give students the best opportunity of satisfactorily completing Modules 2, 3 and 4.

As alternative to attending college, those with some leadwork experience can gain the Certificate through the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL), an assessment of past working experience and qualifications based upon on-site observations and verifying a portfolio of evidence.
